Advice on a Personal Statement

Post by Dtmmears » Wed Oct 29, 2014 1:12 pm

I am a former law student, but my first go at law school didn't go so well. I started out so well, I took my foot off the gas and my lost my good study habits. I also had some private family matters that were terrible distractions. Long story short- I went from on top of the class at fall midterms, with a spot on the school's national mock trial team, to ending with a C average, which meant academic dismissal.

Since then, I've waited out the two-year probationary period. I've been a police officer for about 18 months, and it's keeping my knowledge of the penal code sharp. I've done well, but it's not my ideal career. I took the LSAT again and scored much higher this time. Family matters have calmed down and I have a much better situation now. HERE is the bulk of my question-

How should I go about directing my personal statement? Second chances? Owning up to mistakes? I don't know how that will stack up against others. It's my dream to be a lawyer, and I have the aptitude for the job. I just need advice on how to explain my history to an admission staff without sounding like I'm full of excuses or grasping at straws.

Be sincere, own up to what happened. Don't try to make excuses but show how you've changed. Maybe lean on your work experience to show you are responsible and can be relied upon.
