Possible PS Topic?

Post by Anonymous User » Thu Oct 23, 2014 4:27 pm

I've worked at a default litigation firm on the side of financial institutions for a few years. I want to talk about how my experience there has changed my perception of what lawyers do. I had some moral reservations when I started, but as I learned more about the process, I realized the best outcome was usually mutually beneficial for both the borrowers and the lenders and that the objective was to find a positive sum solution to a conflict. This both strengthened my interest in law and solidified my desire to go to law school. My only concern is that it might come across as a shallow attempt to justify working there despite my reservations.

Any/all input is appreciated.

The only way to see how it "comes across" is to write it. Yes, that may mean wasted work if you get through a draft and decide it's the wrong way to go, but it's very difficult to assess the power of a topic in the abstract. The only way to find the right story is to do some actual writing and find out how it reads.

Probably has some strength to it, but like the previous poster said, you'll need to write it to know for sure. Your topic does have the potential to be dry, so you'll want to imbue your statement with a sense of action and heart. Maybe choose a particular story of resolution that gives dimension to your desire to attend law school.

This is good. Unless you are applying to Yale, who cares what the PS says.
