Need grammar pro for help re tenses in Diversity Statement

Hey all,

I'd like someone who is an intense grammar fiend to take a look at my (non-ethnicity-related) diversity statement. I'm getting a bit confused about the tenses, since I am recounting a story from long ago but switch between past and present-- and can't decide when I should be using the past participle.
