No. American employers are generally accepting of religions, so if you were part of one that you left because it would hurt your career chances it probably won't be your best foot forward to an adcomm. The biggest reason is that "Hey, I left this religion because it would hurt my career prospects." makes you sound like a disingenous opportunist. That isn't flattering and it isn't diverse at law schools. You can make up a reason why you left, but it still circles back to the first issue: if it was that dangerous of a religion is it really going to help you with an adcomm?

You're really vague in the OP, so additional facts may change my response. What's the religion?

Ah so it's not the perception of the religion that would have harmed your career. That does change a lot. I was imagining some kind of Wicca religion. In that case, it sounds like fertile ground for a diversity statement or a personal statement (depending on how you write it and what the experiences were). Be careful with your approach, though: joining and leaving a religion is far different than joining and leaving a club, employer, or anything else. But it sounds like you can easily work it into a great statement. It sounds like it could emphasize your curiosity, perseverance, and leadership.

sounds like something that MIGHT be handled well but 90%+ of people who attempt it would handle poorly
