I don't think it's a cold essay. LS adcoms certainly want people to study tax law, so they'll understand where you're coming from.

I do wonder, though, how much does this PS add to your application? They'll have your transcript and resume, so they'll know about your tax free distributions class(?) and work at REDACTED Inc. Your PS is a chance for you to tell them something new, and it doesn't have to be a 'why law' essay.

What you have so far is a solid PS that you should hold onto as a back-up. However, I'd also encourage you to keep brainstorming. Don't tell them about the things you like, tell them about yourself as a person. What's a core value and when did you have to put that into practice? Think about stuff like that.

I actually liked it. It shows a genuine interest in what an area of law that is typically not shown as glamorous.

Even if the subject matter (tax law) is dry, I think you did a good job of conveying enthusiasm for the topic, which is really the important thing.
