Human Rights- Human Wrongs

Post by lsimon2342 » Tue Jun 10, 2014 11:20 pm

According to the US Department of State Trafficking in Persons Report, 2006, every year 600k to 800k persons are trafficked across international borders. This statistic, which probably many don’t understand or have the ability to relate to, is one of dire importance in the modern world. Moreover, according to Trafficking In Persons in Latin America and the Caribbean (Congressional Research Service), “State Department officials have estimated that as many as 1 million children may work as domestic servants in Latin America, many of whom are vulnerable to verbal, physical, and sexual abuse”. These statistics are certainly alarming; and they represent the passion and desire I have to engage myself in the International Human Rights sector of law. I speak proficiently in Spanish, French, and know English very well. This knowledge gives me the ability to address these human rights concerns throughout the Americas, where a large majority of these problems take place. I want to address these concerns by helping uproot the underground networks of child trafficking, advocating on behalf of victims, helping promote and coordinate the already established causes that aide this tragic issue, and working with uncooperative or uninterested governments to combat it. Youth for Human Rights and Amnesty International are just a couple of the organizations that address these issues on a global scale and are of keen interest to me. As I alluded to previously, law implementation (e.g. immigration), educational services, breaking longstanding “machismo” attitudes, and fighting public corruption within countries are all important ways to combat this societal disgrace. Governments of sovereign countries ought to maintain better care of their children through the proper institutions that give these children the shelter and protection they so desperately need. Having worked with many children, from many different backgrounds, I have gained the compassion for this goal while also realizing, too, the necessity of taking care of the youth whom stand for the future.

Wonderful. However, you could write more about yourself. I feel like the statement is focused more on "my dream and what I want to do after law school".
