Addendum Critique?

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Feb 26, 2014 2:48 pm

Is this addendum okay?

I would like to make the Admissions Committee aware of the following information about my grades.

During the first five semesters of my undergraduate education at the University of Michigan, I planned on attending medical school and was taking the required science classes. For these semesters, I received a cumulative GPA of 3.264. After my fifth semester, I realized that my interests did not lie in the sciences or the pre-med track, and that neither best suited for my abilities. I then fully committed myself to humanities courses for my final three semesters of school. For these semesters, I achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.88. My overall GPA for my Women’s Studies concentration, for which I took classes throughout my time at U of M, is a 3.94. In retrospect, I should not have continued with the pre-med track for so much of my undergraduate education, but it took me some time and some C’s to figure this out.

I hope you will take this information into account when you evaluate my application. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Should I take out the joke about the C's? I feel like I should probably not joke around in my addendum.

Thanks!

OP here:
There's a typo in the third sentence. I meant, "and that neither best suited my abilities."

I don't think you should submit an addendum about this.

"I took science classes at first then did way better when I switched to a women's studies major" doesn't cut it.

Sounds like you just switched to an easier major. It's not very flattering. Plus, what's your LSAC GPA showing, a 3.4? I wouldn't even send an addendum in.

Whether this warrants an addendum at all depends on how your numbers stack up at the schools you're interested in. If your GPA is low for those schools, it makes sense to submit it, but I'd cut down the story about the original major and definitely cut the "in retrospect" sentence.

Simply say that your overall GPA is lower than you feel is representative, due to having started out in a major that turned out to be unsuited to you. Point out that your major GPA is whatever it is (no need to name it) and that your GPA over your last three semesters, once you were in the program that truly suited your goals and fully committed, was whatever it was, and that you believe those numbers are a better reflection of your ability to perform in law school.
