I would like to include one in my applications, but only if it improves the app (duh)
I'm a KJD, christian, caucasian female- nothing obvious really leaps out as "diverse".
But, I am a cancer survivor and a commercial pilot (a field that is extremely male dominated).
Are either of these topics appropriate for a DS? Or would it be better to weave them into my PS?

I think if done well, either one could make a great DS.

Personally intrigued about the cancer survivor story. I think if you can show how the experience made you unique, instead of the experience itself being unique, you'll go places.
Good luck!

That sounds like great DS material. Just don't qualify it with the parts about being caucasian/christian/non-diverse. Jump right into your story about surviving cancer and reflect on the ways it has shaped you into the diverse person that you are.

Re: Question about diversity statements
Yes, yes, yes! Most people assume that diversity is limited to ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, and religion and this view is absolutely false. Diversity is what makes you you. A female cancer-surviving commercial pilot makes you very unique and will make for a very interesting DS. Good luck!
