Contractions

Is there a general consensus or whether to use contractions? I prefer to use them, because I think things like don't sounds better than do not, but I know in many academic writings contractions are frowned upon. Thoughts?

General rule is to not use them. A PS isn't quite academic writing, but it is pretty formal.

Fair enough, I figure I'll have restrain myself from using them because it's not really formal. Thanks.
