How flexible are supplementary essay topics?

Does anyone know how far we can bend topics? For example, if the topic is "How does your background help enrich the environment of XYZ" can you spin it into a "Why XYZ" essay while sprinkling in items about your background?

Yes, that's fine. It's not like a law school exam or the LSAT where you will are expected to strictly answer the call of the question. Just stay within reason.
