Re: HELP! It's hard to get my PS started
Your PS doesn't have to be about diversity, overcoming an obstacle or barrier or any specific topic. You'll find effective topics around these forums that range from the exceptional (like the guy who picked himself up from homelessness) to the relatively mundane yet eloquent (belaying in rockclimbing). The point is that you don't need some unbelievable story to get an ADCOMs attention. Most people aren't going to be made or broken by their PS and relatively few will see any sort of large, tangible impact of it.
So what do you need to do to find an effective topic for you? Get introspective. What do you know really well? What in your past has really affected who you are today? What are you passionate about? Why do you want to go law school at all? What qualities do you want a stranger who is evaluating you as a future professional to see in you? What anecdotes do you have from your past that highlight your strongest character attributes? Can you point to one catalyst moment that brought you to be who you are today? Have you done anything in your life that was difficult that you managed to overcome? Have you ever had to approach a difficult issue, analyze both sides of that issue and come to a conclusion? Have you ever involved yourself in something that was intellectually strenuous that stretched your abilities and made you realize how much potential your intelligence really has?
You don't need to answer all of these questions in a PS. In fact, answer one or maybe two. The point is that you have countless approaches to arriving at a quality PS. Only you can pick the right one.
Now the ball is in your court. Find something in yourself that you want to sell to the ADCOM. Figure out how to best sell that to them. Write something down. Post it here and people can help guide you to make it a submission ready PS.
