I really like the first PS's overcoming adversity but the end when you go into your academic achievements was kind of abrupt for me. I think you can stick with the main athletic story and make that a reflection of how hard work and dedication will help you as a future lawyer or something to that effect. You could always make a third essay out of that academic achievement part because it is interesting as well, but doesnt quiet fit the rest of the story.
The second PS is REALLY great. I think that it would serve best as a PS but you can certainly make a condensed version for a diversity statement. I think adding a a short "Why X" will close it off strongly, talking about how your experiences will add value to whatever school you are applying to.
Of the two, I currently think the second one is stronger, but the Athletic story has potential!
