Help with PS ideas

Post by piney » Sun Dec 23, 2012 8:13 pm

I plan to send out my apps the day after I get my LSAT score. I'm one of those people who decided to apply to law school because I'm interested in a well-paid career. I say "one of" because I have several friends who took this route right after undergrad and were never motivated by a deep, personal passion for law. While the idea of studying and practicing law does interest me, I really decided to become a lawyer because I've exhausted every other option. I know that doesn't make a good PS. I can't ask my friends for their own personal statements, but I really need help with ideas from people with similar backgrounds. About me:

-I'm a 27 year old male. 3.54 GPA and hopefully low to mid 170s LSAT score.
-I'm interested in corporate law.
-I'm only considering NYU or Columbia. I can't get into HYS, and if my score is too low for those schools, I'll retake and apply next year.
-I have a BA in anthropology/archaeology from a top 10 liberal arts, a MA in Medieval Studies, and two internships oriented towards a museum career.
-I have 3-4 years of work experience after college (BA in 2007): half a year as a secretary, a year interning as a cataloger at a medieval art database, a year as a library assistant in a graduate seminary, and currently work as a residential dean and teacher at an all boys boarding school in the south.
-After graduate school, I spent a year as a clothed postulant in a Catholic monastery. Corporate law is a completely different path. Do I have to address that?
-I'll be teaching constitutional law to high schoolers next semester, but other than this, I haven't done anything with law.

I'm also adamant about avoiding personal stories or anything related to "self-identity." I just don't like to share these things with people, and I have a feeling adcoms aren't really interested in hearing them either. Any ideas? Thanks.

To clarify, are you willing to expand on any one of the subjects you mentioned? I can appreciate your unwillingness to disclose personal info. However, it is definitely possible to discuss personal or "sensitive" subject matter without actually disclosing anything personal.

If you want, I am spending the next couple days (except Christmas) editing, since my apps are in. Feel free to PM me any ideas/drafts.

Yeah, of course. Sorry I wasn't clear. I'm willing to write about any of that, and thanks for the offer.
