Question: Should PS address the specific law school?

Post by lilMiao » Tue Dec 18, 2012 12:07 am

Especially when some law schools don't ask for a 'Why xxx' essay. Should we talk about it in the PS?
Like some research centers or programs they offer or simply their location or something?
Or is it OK to submit the general PS for all law schools?

Yes.

If you're going to talk about it in your PS, there should be a specific reason. For example, if you were an engineer with years of experience in patenting and you want to go into IP law and the law school has a great IP program, then yes. But don't just namedrop for the sake of namedropping. AdComms can tell when you are just throwing their name in there.

I wrote specific PS's, granted, I'm not applying to 20+ schools.

And...I wrote specific PS's for every school. But, I was still rejected from a lot of them :)

Well... It's perfectly acceptable, especially if you're in the admit range (but not too far into it). Doesn't mean it's necessarily the best thing to do. I'm sure it only matters at the margins, at any rate.

It doesn't sound so comforting...................

I think I shouldn't write specific PS's..... I can't tell NYU and Columbia "include me! I wanna go to New York!".........
I don't really have specific reasons to apply for a certain school...

My point was that it probably doesn't matter either way.
