Thanks to everyone who commented or sent me comments, you were helpful :). I'm deleting it now to keep it from adcomms. Anyone else curious to see my PS or critique it, just send a PM to Cicero76 (no need for anonymity anymore haha).

I thought it was very good -- good coherent narrative and well written.

Good, just make sure you capitalize senator when it's Senator XXX :)

Don't change a thing. It works, is interesting, and will suit your audience quite well. Even though you get a bit political, I think you handle it well and stick to the issue without polarizing the audience. Pretty much everyone can agree theres a lot wrong with healthcare. Most academics lean liberal anyway, so you're good.
