PS Topic Assistance

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Oct 23, 2012 7:08 pm

After writing and rewriting a really bad draft of my PS, I've decided to completely change my topic. However, I am unsure if I should pursue a particular topic. I was hoping I could get thoughts on this.
I have always been the youngest person among my peers due to my very early start on my education. I began going to college at the age of 15 and started kindergarten at the age of 2. Obviously this has created many advantages and disadvantages. However, the advantages have mainly been academic whereas the disadvantages have been emotional and social. Although, due to my immaturity and abuse of the new found freedom at the start of my college career, my academics did initially suffer. Since then, I have performed very well.
I want to write about my youth because it has given me a very different perspective on my environment and it has also forced me to mature much faster than the normal child. However, due to the negatives that come along with this topic, I'm unsure if I should stay away from this or pursue it. I feel as if it is the most unique thing about me.

Otherwise, I could write about growing up in a very strict and strongly influenced Jamaican household and how that has shaped my decision to attend law school.

Other than those two topics, I am unsure of what to write about and also unsure of how to relate either of those topics to law.

If anyone could be of assistance, I would be very grateful!

Sounds like a good idea to write about, clearly being so young will set you apart from other aplicants.

agreed. it's pretty rare (and memorable) to be someone who began college at 15 and i imagine that topic could become a pretty good PS.

Absolutely, write about it. Just make sure to mention how you've GROWN from your experience. The committee will certainly understand that there would be difficulties in starting college so young. Your story will stand out from others because it is unique.

Talk about some of the obstacles that you faced, and what you did to overcome them. Just make sure to turn any negatives that you mention into a positive. I'm interested to read your PS once you get a rough draft worked up.

Good luck!
