Include a Diversity Statement?

Post by jstacks » Wed Jun 20, 2012 5:59 pm

My mother and half-brother emigrated from England after her divorce from an abusive husband. Would this cultural background warrant a diversity statement?

Yeah, write it. To be clear, were you born in the USA? either way, write it.

No. It has nothing to do with YOUR diversity. Honestly, your an American of European decent, which isn't very diverse...sorry.

Most law students are not one generation removed from another country. I think being in a minority makes the him diverse. A DS may or may not help his app. It wont hurt it though.

Yeah, it definitely won't hurt (at the very least, if its well-written, it will show your writing ability), so if you can juice it up a bit, go ahead; however, admins probably won't see it as adding much to the school's diversity, so you should focus more of your efforts on your PS and why x? essays and make your "diversity" essay less of a priority.

Also, if you choose to write it, make it about you, not about your mom.

Write it. Your mom has definitely had an effect on your life, and being a first generation immigrant is a unique experience that warrants a diversity statement.
