A little out of date, but mostly hasn't changed.

You can write a Why X for pretty much any school. For some schools it's "optional" but is really a defacto "requirement" unless your numbers make you an obvious auto-admit. Some people wait on writing a Why X so they can send it later (in the form of a LOCI) if they are waitlisted. If your numbers are really high for a school, a Why X can prevent you from getting WLed from Yield Protection.
