Which topic?

Post by doclover » Mon Mar 05, 2012 1:39 pm

I'd love your opinion - which is a better personal statement idea?

1. My experience volunteering at an elephant sanctuary.

2. Leaving home after college to find work in a "big" (West Coast) city - no guarantee of success, ended up having to support myself working as a receptionist for a year before finding a job in my vocation.

Probably 1. 2 seems like resume regurgitation as well as being "your fault" for that situation.

Good point. You don't think I could frame it as "I'm a risk-taker, I am tenacious"?

Number one would be more memorable, I think. However, I've been told by AdComm that it can be tough to write a compelling travel abroad personal statement. If you can talk about volunteering at the elephant sanctuary and effectively illustrate your personal goals/values/etc then I'd go for it.

I think number two is just an easier framework for a personal statement. Granted, it likely won't be as memorable.

I'd go with number one, if you're up for the challenge. ;)

1 b/c it is different.

Not 2 b/c I've seen far too many PSes about that sort of stuff.

Thanks, everybody - I value your opinions immensely. I hope I'm up for the challenge, JDizzle2015. I guess we will see - I'm going to go for #1 and I'll let you know where it takes me.
