Simple Q: Is Hoosier too colloquial of a term to use in a law school essay? As in, instead of saying a native of Indiana, saying a native "Hoosier"? I am likely outing myself with this comment, but I am curious as to what people think--especially individuals from Indiana.
Oh and FWIW for people not familiar with the term, there is no such thing as an Indianian or bullshit like that. We call ourselves Hoosiers, and I am using the term in reference to my desire to attend a school in the midwest....

Corollary question: is "back" too colloquial for a PS? As in, "baby got BACK!" In addition, is it possible it's too retro? I don't want to strike the wrong tone.

I would only use it for schools within Indiana (IUB, Indy, ND).
I lived in Indiana for a few years (and outside but still in the Midwest for many more). Inside Indiana it's a common term (as you know)...outside the state it's kind of a pejorative.

Just moved to Indiana about a year ago but it seems like the acceptable term, as long as you don't overuse it
