Quick Question - Undergrad Abbreviation?

Post by Milo42 » Wed Nov 30, 2011 5:52 pm

I went to UC Santa Barbara.

The opening line of my sentence mentions the school. "I entered [school name] with my major undeclared."

So which of the following should I open with:

  • I entered the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) with my major undeclared.
  • I entered UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) with my major undeclared.
Thanks!

The second flows better by far and they will know what you mean when you say "UC Santa Barbara."

I'd think UC is fine. I abbreviated my school's name similarly.

Just in case, I would go the first. Its a grammatical rule to write out the whole name before abbreviating. Though I'm sure admissions will understand what UC means, I wouldn't take the chance

I would definitely spell out the entire name first before you abbreviate it. It can't hurt. Why break a grammatical rule if you don't have to? Just in case the adcon is particularly nit-picky.
