IMO, any chance you are given to persuade adcoms of your ability to succeed during 1L should be taken. I even did this in a score jump addendum. If the essays are tiebreakers for applicants with similar stats, I think you should take every opportunity to sell yourself. I would guess that any series of carefully-written essays would not be 'most common,' but would perhaps be more effective, even if only slightly.
