Addendum Critique

Post by djrico » Mon Oct 10, 2011 2:31 pm

Hey guys,

I plagiarized this past summer—one of the biggest mistakes of my life—and now have to attach this to my LS app. I am not planning to apply to any top Ivy or east coast schools. I will be applying to public schools and some OK private schools. Let me know what you guys think...

I committed a very severe academic violation: I plagiarized on a research paper, which subsequently resulted in sanctions and receiving an F in the course. This negligent behavior has had a profound impact on my life and brought shame upon my family. It has taught me that there is nothing worse than dishonesty and nothing more valuable than honor. Since this violation, I have come to realize that the shame that accompanies obstruction of official policy or the law is much worse than the academic repercussions. After much suffering and and loss of self esteem, this event has permanently scared my moral fiber and will always remain with me throughout my academic and professional careers. This event has motivated me to work harder on the path to achieve my academic goals solely through honest and honorable practices.

Well, I think you have the opportunity to maybe be a little more specific. Why did you commit plagiarism? Pressure, etc...and you don't offer much in the way of showing you've changed, besides your assurances. Understandably, it may be as simple as you're laying it out here, but I'd want more info as an adcomm.

Torts 101 Lesson - Its wasn't negligent if it was intentional.

If it was really a mistake, using "negligent" is fine. If you did it on purpose, it's not.
Other than that, it could be expanded, but not by much. Great start.

I'd agree with others that you should be a little more specific about the context of the plagiarism and what exactly you did. You can also leave out the part about "bringing shame on my family" - this isn't imperial China.

Is your moral fiber terrified or just scared?

Plagiarism is tough to overcome. Fortunately, however, law school applications should be down this cycle so you may be able to find a solid law school that is willing to take a chance on you. You need to accept culpability/responsibility, show remorse & prove that you have changed.

"Brought shame upon my family" is a little... much.

I would reign in your sorrowful purple prose and talk more about what had actually happened. Given the severity of this academic offense, you'll have to explain your circumstances fully to gain their consideration and, hopefully, understanding.

You need to go on the internet and find a good cheating addendum you could copy.
