If you keep descriptions of your current, happy life in balance with your past, then you should be fine. Focus less on not making your reader uncomfortable and more on being positive in your DS as a whole-- sad stories can go from touching to pity-party quite easily if they're not treated properly. If you talk about your past as something you've gone through, are not ashamed of, and have moved away from, your DS can be effective. Just keep the negative checked by the positive.

Hey,

Read your DS question regarding heavy issues, and I kind of had the same question for my own. Have you come up with any good answers?

So, to kind of answer your question, I think in my case I am steering clear of those things. Not sure that I really want a law school to wonder if they are taking a risk on me based on past struggles. ya know?
