PS about changing from pre-med to wanting to become a lawyer

Post by kekepania » Thu Aug 11, 2011 4:07 pm

Is it appropriate/beneficial to discuss how I changed from pre-med to wanting to become a lawyer? Up until about my sophomore year of college (4 years ago), I had always thought I wanted to be a doctor. After much shadowing and volunteering experience, and research into the field though, I changed my mind.

Anyway, I guess I am thinking of writing a little about it in my PS because my change of mind led me to public health, which then attracted me to law.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Sure, unless you make it sound like pre-med was too hard and you think law will be easier, or you sound flighty like you might change your mind again. Present it in a mature and compelling way that shows your growth and self-discovery.

Are you thinking of something along the lines of "anesthesia takes all the fun out of surgery" ?

On a more serious note, consider addressing what brought about the change in your career goals & why law is a more suitable profession for you.

You got me there.

I first thought of becoming a doctor when I was about 5 years old because I really liked how caring, "fun", and compassionate a doctor was. He was treating my 3 year old brother. I developed a somewhat unrealistic vision of what being a doctor was like and as I got more experience in the field, I realized that it wasn't something that I was interested in doing for the rest of my life. There was so much more to being a doctor than patient interaction, and so much more to patient interaction than conmforting a child with a bad, but not severe, life-threatening injury. I know there is 'crap' to deal with in every profession, but I'm not willing to put up with the 'crap' that physicians face. I also believed that I could save the world by being a physician, but I realized that my desired role in healthcare is more broad and population/systems based. Now I know that I won't save the world as a lawyer, or in any other profession, but I think as a lawyer, I will have the knowledge and skills more suitable to working towards system changes in healthcare.
