Is M the only school that requires it. I thought it was just a type of personal statement (i.e. a wanna go to law school bc X is a PS topic). But on Michigan's website it says:
Two essays to supplement the résumé: a personal statement and a statement of purpose written by the applicant in English as further described on the application form.
???
I'm confused.

A personal statement is a personal narrative. What makes you, "you"? What makes you special, what do you bring to the table? A statement of purpose sounds just like that. Why do you want to go to law school? More specifically, why do you want to go to that particular law school?
A personal statement should generally not be a why I want to go to law school essay. If they want to know why you want to go to law school, they would ask for a statement of purpose
