Should I write a DS?

Post by ma456 » Wed Nov 10, 2010 12:18 am

I can't decide if I have anything worthwhile to write a diversity statement about, wanna help?
Here are some of my ideas:

1) My grandparents lived in poverty in rural Tennessee before moving to Ohio. My mom grew up in Ohio under similar circumstances but I did not. She has been very open about her childhood and obstacles. I now live in New York and am mostly applying to schools in cities.
2) My older sister is gay and only very recently came out to our parents, though she came out to me a few years prior.
3) When I was 14 I spent a month living in Central America with a family drastically different than my own. They were considered fairly well off by their standards but by no means American standards.

Are any of these DS worthy? I'm worried about trying to look diverse and looking like I'm trying too hard.

I think it would seem that you are trying too hard. Really, the stories affected you, but none of these things really happened to you specifically. Unless one of them changed your life in a way you can express, I would not write one.
