is using a dash (as in "-") a faux-pas in essays to law schools? (i.e. in formal writing?) the dash is of course being used properly and I could conceivably use a comma instead but the necessary emphasis would not be there.

I have a dash in mine--just be sure you use it correctly. No space before; no space after. Oh, and it turns into one long dash in Word.

Well there are em-dashes and en-dashes are have different uses. Make sure you use the right one, as applicable.
