PS Ideas

Post by ivantheterbl » Mon Jul 12, 2010 9:44 pm

Hey Guys

So I took the June LSAT, am really happy with my score, and am now going to try and focus on my PS since applications aren't really available yet. My main problem is I have NO IDEA what to write about, but have a few ideas. Any and all suggestions stemming from these would be much appreciated!

1. Discuss how my childhood impacted who I am today-- When I was younger my dad was in the air force so we would move around constantly, basically never went to the same school, so maybe I could talk about how this impacted me as a person

2. Try to tie mathematics with law-- I am a math major, which I feel is somewhat unique for law school applicants so I thought about making a PS discuss my passion for mathematics and how it relates to my passion/interest in law

3. Discuss my job on campus-- I'm relatively sure I am going to put this in an addendum, but for my UG school I interview prospective students/their parents and do a write up which goes into their file-- Again, nothing too interesting so prolly not gonna be the PS, but I wanted to put all possible ideas out here

4. My passion for the Civil War-- Basically I'm a huge Civil War buff (used to reenact, collect artifacts, etc) and it is a big part of my life-- I think this one would be somewhat difficult to make seem meaningful, but it is a big part of who I am

These are my four really rough ideas now-- I know they would need to be developed more, but just wanted to see what other people thought about them. Obviously the typical I want to attend x or y law school essay is still a possibility, these are the others right now

Set aside a day wherein you start writing about all of these in separate drafts. There will be a point when you're doing so when you'll know whether or not you can tie the subject matter into your reasoning for why you should attend law school effectively and whether or not the subject successfully illuminates aspects of your character.

...Since you asked, I'll just say that I sense a lack of passion regarding the "job on campus" option. My favorite is the Civil War one, but I'm heavily compromised on that option because I love history. I get the sense that the first option has a lot of possible depth.

Yeah like I said I was thinking that the job topic would be better suited for an addendum-- I guess I think each of them have their relative strengths, so I didn't know which would appeal the most to admissions counselors. I feel that the math could be the most intellectual, the Civil War the most personally meaningful (its more than just a hobby), and the one about moving is very introspective and "deep" (not sure of the best word to use there...)

I would definitely try out the civil war one. It sounds interesting and unique, and you can probably spin it to show your positive qualities. Of course, it also means the adcomms will start thinking of you as "the Civil War guy" but that can be a good thing :)
