I'm planning on attending law school in the US (currently undergrad in HYP), but my career goals include returning to my home country eventually and working in government/politics. I'm definitely thinking international law and I'm especially interested in human rights - an area, in which my country is quite backward.
Do you think it's bad idea to write my PS on how my interest in international law and politics was born and explain that I intend to work outside the US (i.e. at home/Europe) ultimately?
I'm afraid of the admissions officers thinking "well, if you don't want to stay in the US in the long run, why the hell would you want to go to a US law school?!" (And if I adddress this potential question in my PS too obviously, it will sound too defensive...)
What do you all think?

i dont know about hurting your chances, but i just personally wouldnt write your personal statement on anything having to do with law...i think you can spin this topic and make it work without bringing in your desire to return to your home and work there (just talk about how it affected you as a person, etc). problem solved.

it won't hurt you at all. It will make you an interesting applicant. Law schools don't really care where you work, so long as you are successful and make the school look good. Having an international career would distinguish the school you eventually attend (as international law is a rare job to get). All sorts of international figures study in America. I think it is a great PS topic.
You should be more concerned about whether or not a law degree will help you enough in your home country politics to justify the Debt. Law schools won't care where you go, but will your foreign country care whether you went to law school? This will vary depending on which country you are talking about. You might be better off shipping out with your HYP Bachelors (again depending on the country).
