Serious question about getting bullied in undergrad, grad or

Post by transferme » Tue Apr 27, 2010 11:14 pm

professional school...

Wouldn't that be a really bad thing to discuss in a personal statement? What do you think?

If you're talking about being physically assaulted by a classmate and how this experience shocked you and changed your view on life so much that it's leading you to go to law school now, then possibly, yes.

If you're talking about how campus administrators were "bullying" you by not letting you ban gays or blacks from your registered student organization, then not so much.

Wouldn't talk about it. Bullying is pretty common in grade school, but if you're getting bullied at this age, it could be a sign that you have a "victim" personality

+1,000,000. You generally want to avoid anything in your PS that makes it look like you weak or unable to work through problems with other people. That is, after all, most of being a lawyer.

As a future lawyer, you should be learning how to push others around....

 Who gets bullied in undergrad? You asking about grad and professional school sort of implies that you got bullied there too. Unless you are a little person or have a physical defect I wouldn't talk about it.

On the other hand, if your PS is about how you reclaimed your dignity by taking karate lessons from a wise old Asian man who made you wax his car . . .
Awesome! I'm watching the Karate Kid right now

In general, a risky PS is a no-go. If you write this someone might really like it, and some people might think you can't work out personal problems. I would not do this.

I would like to know more details though.

I think this would be an unattractive PS for most admissions personnel. Be strong, state exactly why you are a conqueror and not the conquered. Even if your PS is about you overcoming your bullying I think that the fact that you allowed yourself to be bullied well into your professional academic career is still a turn off.

+1 but for slightly different reason... I think a lot of people would, consciously or otherwise, assume that anyone getting bullied in college and beyond has something terribly wrong with them and must somehow deserve it. There's a pretty strong instinct to make sense of the world, even if that means making unfair assumptions. I wouldn't risk it.
