I'm struggling to find an explanation to put in my personal statement as to why I will not be able to adequately help people without a Juris Doctorate. Why do I have to be a lawyer? What kind of reasons did you guys give?

I wouldn't dwell on that. I mean, for starters, you need to pass the bar in your state to represent others, but they know this. I would focus more of your attention on what it is that makes you want to represent clients in the first place.
