Kant wrote:For the record you probably want readability levels no higher than tenth grade level and no lower then 8th. Once you get into the high levels it is more likely that your ps is verbose nonsense then good writing.
This is exactly what I was hoping to find in here. All my academic papers from are right at 12, but my PS hovers around 9.5. Initially, this thread made me nervous about it, but I don't think my PS has much to gain from larger words or more-complexly constructed sentences.

Given the maelstrom that my PS caused for being overly wordy:

GPA: 3.75
LSAT: 166
FKR: 60.1
FKGL: 11.5
Sentence Length: 27 Words Per

Highest Acceptance: TBD - T20 hopefully

However, I just did a rhetorical analysis project for my Advanced Grammar class (last class I ever took at UG), and my writing always scores much harder on the Gunning Fog and other analysis tools that focus more on "complex" words.

Gunning Fog: 15.0
Automated Readability: 13.7

I don't think there's going to be much of a correlation here, at least not on FKRS, context is too important (I'm a teacher and have actually looked a several of these "readability" scores. Out of curiosity I ran a test on some of my lecture notes from an upper level biology class I took in college, it got...

Readability 64.5
Grade level. 10.8

Which goes to show it's very probably the actual coherence of your essay has very little to do with the grade level or readability score. Here is the text that I analyzed.

"The entire reaction of Complex IV is as follows

4 cytochrome c (Fe2+) + 4H+ + O2  4 cytochrome c (Fe3+) + 2H2O

It contains 4 redox centers, cytochrome a, cytochrome a3 a Cu atom called CuB and a pair of copper atoms called CuA center which are bridged by the sulfur atoms of two Cys residues making it a bit like a [2Fe-2S] cluster.

The electrons proceed in a linear manner from cytochrome c to the CuA center, then to the heme a then to heme a3 and CuB. each electron moved moves one H+ to the intermembrane space from the matrix.

However the Fe of the heme from a3 forms a binuclear complex with CuB a3-CuB

The His 240 of the CuB is covalently attached to a Tyr 244 which moves the phenolic-OH group of Tyr 244 close to the heme a3

SO

The oxidized binuclear complex [Fe(III)a3—OH- Cu(II)B] is reduced (via cytochrome a heme and CuA) to [Fe(II)a3 Cu(I)B] and one proton from the matrix (along with the the H from the hydroxyl"
