I read a PS on this site that started, "I let one rip as I walked into a crowded elevator." Author REFUSED to change it.

I know some people will disagree but....

Your Personal Drug Addiction

Even if it is a story about you becoming clean and winning a nobel peace prize, there is always some doubt about your stability and the possibility of a relapse.

Just my opinion.

the consensus on TLS is that adcomms are more interested in keg stands. i'd save that for your resume.

another for the list

- onomatopoeia (whoosh whoosh whoosh went the cruise ship as i stared from my suite at the indigenous people of the caribbean)
You know, my PS employed a bit of onomatopoeia as a motif throughout, and I stand by it. But I feel less good about it, now. :-/

I really hope that one day someone who gets a 180 sends at least one school a PS that just says:

I got a 180.

End.

Not epic when you're attempting to compare your trajectory in life to Tidus from FFX.

I see a lot of PS drafts that people come up with on here that read like they're some cheesy film noir narrative. Maybe it's just me, but making your PS read like a story seems kinda lame in general to me.

100% disagree. My PS read like a story, a story about me and about what led to my pursuit of a law career. I certainly used every narrative technique at my disposal while I was drafting that thing, too. I got multiple acceptance letters with handwritten notes commenting on elements of the story and how they hoped I'd continue my journey at their law school.

Like anything else, the trick is to do it well, and make sure you're following the instructions. A story about your own life, or a particular fragment of it, can effectively paint a picture of a person they'd want to admit.

Yeah, I suppose that's true if you have a compelling story to tell and it is done well. Like I said, it's probably just me. I know I would have difficulty writing something like that because I have a very direct/analytic writing style as it is, so I'm not sure I could pull it off.

Yeah, I think ability and skill matter a lot. If you do it badly the result can be worse than not trying it at all. I studied narrative storytelling extensively in college, so it comes a lot more naturally to me now.
