I didn't get a t-shirt at the ASW! When did you get it? I arrived late, like by an hour. I want a t-shirt! Do you think I can ask for one? or would that be uncool? We got t-shirts at ASW.

mildmannered, we got them during registration on the first day. I don't see why they wouldn't give you one. Wouldn't hurt to ask admissions
After all, they want you to be happy!

The admissions ladies chased me down to make sure I got mine at ASW. It was just another sign to me that Michigan really cared about how it treated its students.
I hope you all LOVE ann arbor this summer!!

I just got my financial aid award, and it seemed to indicate that we are not allowed to borrow from private sources in excess of the student budget. Does this mean that if, for some reason, one was to run out of money during the year, you would not be allowed to take out a BoA personal loan or something?

I think you can't borrow GRADPlus loans in excess of the student budget. You can get private loans for anything from a bank I think.

My understanding was that they would add that 2k to your Gradplus loan. If you get the school health insurance the GradPLus will also be adjusted up (as it would be for the other allowable expenses).

Re: U. of Michigan Law School '11
All education loans have to be approved by the school*, which means that the school gets the final say on the total amount which you borrow. You can go under budget, of course, but you can't borrow more than that total. Any aid you receive is deducted from the budget too.
I find financial aid to be infuriating and paternalistic in general, but Dean Gottschalk is pretty great about working with you a) if you have good reason to increase your budget up front, or b) if something comes up and you need more money in a pinch. Plus, the school provides emergency short-term loans of up to $1000 with no questions asked.
And it's true that the computer loan can't go through Grad Plus - not a Michigan rule, as far as I understand. I didn't do a computer loan, so I'm not much help. They mean it, though, about only offering that your first year.
* I'm sure that some banks or other lenders offer something called an "education loan" that doesn't have to go through the school, but it would probably be a typical private loan that you would need to start making payments on immediately. I'm talking about the classic student loan in any of its many forms.

Ok, so just to confirm, you CAN take out typical private, non-education loans without it directly affecting your financial aid then, right?

Ulf-Yes, you can take out private non-education loans without it affecting your financial aid. If you're doing this for non-educational costs like a car payment or cc debt or something you don't need to get it approved by the school, you just don't get the benefits of student loans (like deferred payments, etc).

Actually, you can get private student loans too... the only stuff required as evidence is that you're full-time at school.

Hey all! Just joined.
I put in my Michigan deposit - very excited!
I had to do some traveling for work though and missed both ASWs. When do summer starters begin? Before settling 100% I'd like to see the school while classes are in session, and my work schedule has relaxed a considerable amount so I can start thinking about a trip.
Thanks so much - and hopefully I'll see a lot of you in the fall/summer!
