Newark is the main domestic travel airport for the nyc area. If you fly in there you can take the AirTrain to Newark Penn Station then a Path into Manhattan. There are also reasonable car services, I suggest calling 212-777-7777 I've used them in the past.

This thread explores the issue some:redacted wrote: I'm confused. So the only significant advantage of the GradPLUS program is that you lock in your loans at a relatively high 8.5%? And this is why it seems like it's the route everyone's going?
http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... =+gradplus
For me, I want to go into public interest so I wanted the option of using the Federal IBR in case it turns out to be a better deal than NYU's LRAP.
I just know that I won't be personally paying back all of my loans and I know that I won't have a high salary, so I am doing the more risk averse thing--grad plus.

If the beds are anything like the UG ones, you will be able to buy some bed lifts at Bed Bath and Beyond (or other similar store) and raise the bed a foot or two, giving you some extra storage space.

Some people like the security of a fixed rate. I did not go that route because the prime rate is absurdly low right now AND it is unlikely to rise above 9.5 which is what it would have to be to match the PLUS because I (and I'm sure plenty of other people) got prime minus 1%.redacted wrote:I'm confused. As for the loans:
1) NYU's LRAP does cover private loans, up to the certified amount minus expected student contribution. It's the FEDERAL loan forgiveness program that requires GradPLUS loans.
2) Private loan interest rates are not likely to "shoot up" all of a sudden, as they are tied to the Prime Rate. Unless the government all of a sudden raises interest rates 80s style, I wouldn't worry about interest rate risk, especially considering the rate is currently considerably lower on a private loan than on a GradPLUS loan.
Food for thought.

Newark? Never flown in there. I would recommend LGA. I've always gone to LGA for Manhattan and JFK if I was stopping in Brooklyn first.decidingagain wrote:Newark is the main domestic travel airport for the nyc area. Newark is insanely convenient. The Airtrain is just perfect. JFK has one now too, haven't taken it yet... my girlfriend took it once and it took her about an hour and fifteen minutes to get from her apartment to JFK.

Flying into Newark is very convenient and seems to be a little cheaper than JFK (I've been tracking the prices of flights out of JFK and EWR to LAX for Thanksgiving for the last month).
You don't need to take Path like someone said above. Its a straight shot from EWR to Penn Station on NJ Transit. It takes less than 20 minutes.
JFK isn't too bad though. Takes a little bit longer. You have to take the air train from the airport to Jamaica station, which can take ~15 min, then LIRR to Penn Station (~30 min if i remember correctly).

Does anyone know when we will get our class schedule? Also, does anyone know if all first-year students have class every day M-F?

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that we get them at orientation.lmbrooklyn wrote:Does anyone know when we will get our class schedule? Also, does anyone know if all first-year students have class every day M-F?
I was pretty bored a few weeks ago and looked at all the class schedules for the different sections and from what I can tell, everyone will have class M-F.

(NYU Rising 2L) Don't worry about Friday Lawyering: it gets cancelled nearly half the time, especially later in the semester. Oh, and it's pass/fail.

So I got into NYU today. Do any of you know how generous they are with need based grants? I'd probably need a pretty nice grant to make me change from UVa this late.

They don't seem to be too generous. A lot of people didn't get anything.gladiator wrote:So I got into NYU today. Do any of you know how generous they are with need based grants? I'd probably need a pretty nice grant to make me change from UVa this late.

I was told 15k a year is the maximum they give out in need-based.urmom wrote:They don't seem to be too generous. A lot of people didn't get anything.gladiator wrote:So I got into NYU today. Also, do students typically have to bring textbooks to every class? I am trying to decide what type of laptop/backpack to purchase.

Everyone was complaining about their awards in the thread a few months ago, but I have no idea if people at other schools complained about their awards as well...

I think so...go to Kinkos and get the books chopped into a few mini-books and only bring the sections you need.decidingagain wrote:I was told 15k a year is the maximum they give out in need-based.urmom wrote:They don't seem to be too generous. Re: NYU Law Class of 2011
I sent this to the listserv, but I'll try here too.
A co-worker of mine e-mailed me to say that his brother-in-law's building on the LES has a few vacant apartments. His description of the apartments:
"Lower East Side, Stanton and Essex, three two-bed room apartment for rent, one is brand-new interior asking $3000/month, one asking $2800, one remodel last year asking $2500."
I'm posting the photos here. If you're interested, PM me and I'll put you in touch.

It is definitely easy to do this if you aren't planning on bringing multiple suitcases. But I assume most people will be maxing out on the suitcases and thus taking a taxi directly to NYU. In that case, I believe LGA is a cheaper taxi route.

Re: NYU Law Class of 2011
I ran into something so cool that I had to start an account to tell allllll about it. I was able to check out my section, before my schedule/prawfs info was posted. If anyone wants to do the same all you have to is:
- log into NYUHome, then
- click Academics at the top menu bar, then
- click student login under albert for students, and then
- at the near center of the screen under the registration header, click student schedule.
- After that click the drop down menu and scroll down to school of law and click submit.
Mine came out to be L01.-9001-001. 001 being the section assignment code. I had a buddy pull his up and his number was the exact same as mine. Maybe we're just lucky or maybe it's the generic placement until the 14th when it all gets reported.
If anyone pulls it up and gets assigned to somewhere other than section one, post a reply on here.
