mtk04 wrote:Proud to say that, after pursuing the forums since the dreary LSAT days without posting, I am coming out of the 'cave' to post on this thread. I applied to all Florida and DC area law schools, except for Georgetown because of my lowly 161 LSAT score, and was accepted to all (didn't apply to Nova, Barry, Famu, or St. thomas, sorry guys not worth the app. fee) and without a doubt was most impressed by FSU when taking in all factors. Look, at some point we all need to admit that when it comes to rankings there are some serious flaws. Schools ranked within 20 or so spots of each other below the top 20 carry near equal weight in their respective regions. Plain and simple. Feel free to debate me on the point. The connections you make at firms and so forth while in law school are far more critical to your first job than where you go to law school following the 20+ spot rule. Where you go from there is as the saying goes: the cream always rises. So this UF vs FSU is really ridiculous. FSU clearly makes up for any academic or reputable shortcomings (if thats the argument, which I think was valid in 1998, but not in 2008) by it's clearly superior location in Tallahassee which is one giant city of law and lobbying firms (450) while boasting the Supreme Court, all lower courts, legislative and executive branches of Florida's government, etc. Two great schools, different strengths.

Anywaysssssssss, after visiting most of the schools I am absolutely thrilled to be choosing FSU. I was impressed top to bottom with everything. And when they said that all the courts/firms/capital were in walking distance, they weren't kidding. They are all within 5 minutes WALKING distance. The students there are also a major plus. They were all very intelligent and well spoken as well as very personable and sociable- signs of successful individuals (sorry, some traits are just preferred by firms, I've worked for quite a few). Loved the campus. Loved even more the tuition. I will be walking away with a very small debt, which if you have done any research, is a large component of future professional freedom among attorneys these days. In any case, show the love, because I think FSU is a great choice for law school!
Nice, one more! Glad to see more and more people committing. I Agree with all the above sentiments! Welcome to the FSU fam. I was really impressed by the cohesiveness of the class (which every student I have met or talked to has echoed) as well. Are you headed towards the April 11th Admitted Students Day?

Yah next Friday, I went up to visit in February and it was pretty dreary, so hopefully it will be a little bit nicer and sunnier.

My heart wasn't fully committed in february so I did not enjoy it as much as I could have, but this I am really psyched to go! I wonder what the turn out will be...

and chris... will do!

Awesome! good to hear it. Everything counts. Plus a big thing with a lot of schools is they only are gonna want to offer admission this late in the process if they are sure you are going to accept.

I'm sure you definitely highlighted yourself with her/him. Don't give up!

EDIT: I assumed the secretary was a woman, how close-minded

out of curiosity, how did everyone receive their acceptances?

also, is that status checker good for anything other than telling you that they have your LOR's, LSDAS report etc? which is to say, does it actually say when you have gone decision?

hope to see you all there this fall, and with any luck, next friday at admitted students day!

I got my acceptance via snail mail. A couple of days later there was a congratulatory call. After that, I got another packet with how to accept/decline admission. Status checker says nothing besides that they have your info. Good luck!

Hey kd! Yah this one is on life support....but nevertheless still kicking! Welcome to the FSU C/O 2011 family! Is your name on LSN kd as well?

And no, no money from GW. That is ok - to be honest, I am glad because I did not want to have the dilemma of which school to go to. I'll probably actually withdraw from the waitlists I have as well. My heart and mind are pretty much set on FSU and what it has to offer so I am really psyched.

You going to the Admitted student day on the 11th?

And WOODFORD - hey weren't you the one that put the picture of Richard Simmons on that one thread? We were having a friendly tiff! What's up buddy! Have you been accepted yet? If not I hope the good word comes soon! Would love to have you! And no the website is just useful to see if your stuff is complete. I was accepted back in November and it still says complete.

My name on LSN is LadyK. I won't be at admitted students day. I adjunct at the local university and can't take off another Friday. I did a tour and sat in on a class last week though. Let me know how it goes. I've heard it's a lot of fun. :D

I did my master's in Tallahassee and lived there for a year and a half. I really like it. I'm not sure what you're comparing it to, but there is decent shopping (two malls with your basic stores and some pretty cool boutiques), really delicious restaurants and a good social scene.

Because there's a big political scene, you have both your college town types of places, but also places that are a little more upscale and sophisticated so legislators can hang out.

I am definitely looking forward to going back. Does that help? Or do you want to know something more specific?

EDIT: Forgot to answer around FSU. Lol. The campus is pretty close to the downtown area where the capital is. The main road to the university is a typical college strip with some bars and places to eat. Pretty basic.

I think I am gonna end up in the South Florida area and work for the government or some other public interest type work. I am sure my three years at FSU will guide me along the correct path.

What about you? Where do you plan on living after graduation?

well this is my huge problem... i went to tally this weekend and i was telling my friends that i wanted to attend the law school and all of thier jaws dropped... here's why... i HATE miami, i've lived here my entire life and I am soooo over it. I work at one of America's biggest Biglaws in Miami and even maybe having a job there when i graduate won't coax me to go back. I got accepted to Loyola in Chicago which I'm really happy about bc I love chicago and my biglaw has an office there... i know fsu is ranked higher than loyola, but I'm stuck on what i want to do since fsu is a good school, but very regional... maybe my thoughts will change when if i get accepted but i don't see myself staying in tally either...

If you already have big law connections, couldn't they help you get to one of their offices in whatever city you'd like anyway? Also, Tally has some pretty decent D.C. connections.

Here is my take on Tallahassee... Aesthetically, I think it is ok... however, it is what you make of it. It has a very very "southern" feel with the weeping willow trees (I think that is what they are). I am more of a urban type person but I nevertheless like it. However, I do not believe, and I say this with all honesty, you will find any better bang for your buck as it pertains to "location opportunity" (pleasant sounding... isn't it?).

What do I mean by that? Within a 3 mile radius you have all three branches of government to interact with. A plethora of other government agencies are located within the city and also its periphery. They have a wonderful downtown area that has much to offer. This all having been said, FSU places over 1/3 of its graduates into government/public interest work. If you want to do biglaw or something of the like, I do not know if I would advocate this school over say... UF or Miami (maybe UF 8) ).

That all having been said, opportunities are there - it is just a matter of whether you capitalize on them. Not sure how I got diverted from the topic of Tallahassee, but there you have it.

I honestly feel if you go into the school with an attitude that the area sucks, then unfortunately, it probably will. So, go into whatever school you go into with a positive mindset - its probably the best thing you can do for yourself (and your grades lol). That is my $.02

Hey what are you guys gonna do about housing?

I was looking at the Florida Towers - located right across the school. Its cheap and I figured it would make it convenient studying in the library. You guys?

FSU should pay you for advertising. You are a great spokesperson. :D

I am thinking about University Lofts - .9 miles from the law school and for $600 you get just about everything. I'm also looking at Parkwood Apartments which is .2 miles from the school. Where's Florida Towers?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
