I'm still not sure if I'm going to go to the ASW in March or April. Part of me wants to wait until the April one, so that (hopefully) a scholarship decision will have been made.

I'm not even positive if I want to go to an ASW at all. I already visited the school, and I grew up in Madison, so I'm not sure there would be much of a benefit for me.

I'm also debating whether I should RSVP for the LEO banquet or not. I'm under the impression that it gives people a good 'in' with some of the professors, even if you aren't actually a minority.

I received the admitted student packet of info from UW law on friday, but they accidentaly gave me 2 copies of the 3rd page and did not include the 2nd page. I am assuming the 2nd page had deadlines and other important info on it. Could someone hwo also received this packet of info please let me know what info was on the 2nd page?

This could explain why there are so few people registered on the admitted students' forum. You should contact Madison about it. I don't have the letter anymore- there weren't any really important deadlines.

It basically said that in Mid-March, you would get another letter directing you to an online page where you click attending, withdrawing, or ask for more time. You have to make the decision by mid/early April, unless you ask for more time, in which case the deadline is extended to May.

Madison has no seat deposit.

Aside from that, it was all information that you can find on the admitted students' website (ASW dates, Leo/QLaw banquets, etc) and that username/password for the forums, which is generic and you should be able to get from the admissions office.

What I found interesting from ASW:

The first scholarship offers are being sent out this week.

The prof that does a lot of the work on the clinicals is really, really passionate about what she does, and sold me on the idea of doing a clinical that isn't even necesarily related to what I anticipate doing with law. The school is apparently decent about giving stipends to people who do PI stuff during 1L summer, including clinics that you get credit for, as well as what amounts to short-term clerkship opportunities.

Only 25% of students get jobs offers through OCI; that number was much, much lower than I would have expected, and has me a bit concerned.

The high during both days was only 14 degrees. Wisconsin sucks.

As with most non T14 law schools yet still T1 law schools, being in the top half/top third is necessary for getting an interview opportunity (of course, the Skadden's of the world will require top 10%)...should not really be a surprise to anyone here.

Also, while 25% may be lower than many people expected, we need to take into account the % of students who actively seek biglaw jobs via OCI's. UW Law does produce a lot of lawyers who opt to not go into corp law, and therefore would cause this % to appear low. Just some thoughts.

since no one has much to report i will offer the following. this will be of interest to you only if you are a drinker:

having visited a few weekends ago i can vouch for a handful of good bars, none of which were overrun by undergrads and other undesirables, all of which get my seal of approval:

1. great dane pub. had lunch here. fantastic beer brewed on site. tried 4 or 5 different beers and they were all great. for those of us who have graduated from pbr, old style, budweiser and the like, this is a wonderful bar.

2. brocach (sp?) as a person of irish heritage coming from a city with forty-feckin-thousand irish bars, i can tell you that this one is good. no tv, serious whiskey list, solid music = thumbs up.

3. i wanna say it was called genna's. my favorite of the bunch. right on the capital. solid drinks, good mix of people, good music. good bar.
now if only someone would share something about the actual asw.

this illuminates an important point. that only 25% get jobs thru oci does not mean everyone else is unemployed; it just means that people may have to search for a job and hustle a little...the same way everyone else in the free world does.

25% seems okay to me. Don't disregard the importance of networking and the broader selection of firms which result from it. I found this article below, a little old, but insightful.

Don't get me wrong, I'm submitting my resume to UW OCI's if one of the participating Chicago or Minneapolis firms catches my eye, but I enjoy the fact that Wisconsin gets invited to a number of off-campus interview fairs across the country.
