Above the academics and opportunities which are somewhat similar among schools in this range, there were a few things.

1) people are ludicrously nice. Now I know that this seems awfully subjective, but Michigan does have a rep for this. When I went to Mich to visit and met some people I met on another board, I realized it is kind of true. The admissions staff are also incredibly nice.

2) people love the school ... it's almost sickening. To me, this is kind of important. My cousin goes to NYU Law (which is obviously a fantastic school), but even she says there's a bit of 'I'm here 'cause I didn't get into Columbia/Harvard'. To me, that kind of sentiment is a turnoff. I'm not saying that there aren't people who feel that, but by and large people seem extremely happy to be there.

3) The campus and AA. Sure it's cold. If you're allergic to the cold, Michigan may not be for you. The campus, especially the law school is GORGEOUS. You can see the above video to get a sense of that. I get the feeling AA isn't that cheap, but rent sure beats NY/DC/Chi-town. Now it obviously doesn't have what those cities offer, but it is what it is. As a disclaimer, I'm in Ithaca, so AA is bigger and may be warmer than what I'm used to now.

4) Sports. I went to Columbia for undergrad and Cornell for grad. 'nuff said.

5) International programs. I know that all the top schools have these, but Michigan has one with Japanese law which I'm interested in. A couple programs that I'm kind of jealous of though are NU's unjust convinctions program and Cornell's death penalty program.

In the end it was really the 'niceness' that got me. Obviously going to a top school was a high priority for me. But anything that can take the edge off of having to deal with only mean overcompetitive f

cks .... I'll take it. I'm sure there'll be enough of that working as a lawyer. With the people I know who are 1Ls now at UMich I wonder if it's almost too much fun. Not right this minute with finals...but still.

I LOVE the law school!!!!

It's the thick of exams and I still don't hate it. I still don't hate the library or my classmates...one of my classmates (on TLS here) just did a case chart for our Thursday exam and emailed me, asking if I wanted it. I've had tons of people give me stuff and I've willingly shared other files. Sure, you don't want the whole class to have the same things, but it's just...it's fantastic here.

I just move here from Alabama. Yes, it's cold, but it's not that bad. I don't know if this is a good thing or not...but you don't have much of a chance to be outside. It's not like you're standing around. It's wake up, go to campus...be at campus...dwell in campus...coffee/food break (inside campus)...and then go home.

It's pretty beautiful, the quad is gorgeous when it snows.

I was accepted to UM last Thursday. Needless to say, I was so pumped to get that DVD and pop it in. My wife went there undergrad and I've visited the school. It's beautiful and the people are very nice.
So far I'm in to GULC and Notre Dame with a merit scholarship. I'm waiting on Boalt, Stanford and Northwestern to make my final decision, but I can see myself choosing UM over all of them. The only thing is $$$. It's so expensive compared to Boalt, and they don't give you residency. Congrats to all who have already gotten the big white package!

About the $$$ concerns, I don't know how other schools work, but I know that Michigan awards the Darrow scholarship (full) to a select handful immediately.

They also award it on a rolling basis. Just because you don't get an offer right away doesn't mean you won't be up for consideration at a later time. I know that during December a lot of things slow down and pick up again in January...so keep your fingers crossed!

UM sounds amazing! Awesomepossum, thanks for the breakdown! I went to Cornell for undergrad - loved it - but missed the sports scene being that I'm from Texas (hook'um). So UM is really tempting with that combination. Now my dilemma is that I'm in at Texas with a great scholarship, I'm in at Duke, and now Michigan (so put me in the undecided list please). Which one do I choose?!?!?

trunksalot...that's a high class problem you have. Objectively, I'll say this. If you're dead set on working in Texas, then UT is probably something to seriously consider if you're getting much more money from them and have in state tuition.

If you're even a little bit unsure about that or think you may change your mind about where you want to be, I think you have to look at the T14 schools and make those your priority.

Personally I'm obviously biased. I'm especially high on Mich and Duke is my least favorite school of the T14. I've written some stuff about that on the UMich vs. Duke vs. somethingelse thread.
