Am I the only one who thinks that a non-binding confirmation of one's intent to register is um, well... pointless?

thanks for the info, awaitingmailman. i had also called the housing office and they told me august as well. so the law school told you that we'd start hearing in july?awaitingmailman wrote:and i was wrong about lottery applicants not hearing until August for Weyburn. the law school checked with housing and they said we should begin to hear by July (but they'll still consider lottery applicants later on if you don't get an offer in july so you won't be getting a notice if you dont get an apartment).
on housing applications, what did everyone put for desired move in date? i don't know if that has any bearing on selection. seems kinda pointless if we're not going to hear until late july/august anyway.

Yeah. The law school sent me an email they shot to Housing with Housing saying there must have been some confusion and confirming that lottery applicants will begin to hear by July.
they said that if you dont get a spot in July, they wont notify you and will continue to consider you as spots open up (even if the move in date you selected has already passed).

Re: UCLA Law Class of 2011
which date did you put for move-in? i put mid-july (in case i get into the summer program), but in retrospect that seems too early for the lottery process. i know you said the housing office still considers you even if your date passed, but i just hope it doesn't have any negative impact.awaitingmailman wrote:

i put august 1st, but i really dont think the date matters. if they have space, they'll give you an offer for whatevers available i think.redux wrote:which date did you put for move-in? i put mid-july (in case i get into the summer program), but in retrospect that seems too early for the lottery process. i know you said the housing office still considers you even if your date passed, but i just hope it doesn't have any negative impact.awaitingmailman wrote:

Two fat man questions:
1) Is the Westwood Sunday Farmer's Market open year round?
2) Where do you go to buy groceries near campus?

1. ! i didn't know they reopened the farmer's market! the old one was open year round so im guessing this will be too. not sure if they open when it rains though, probably not.
2. there's a Ralphs and a Whole Foods you can walk to in Westwood. the fresh veggies/ fruits are mostly organic in both markets and kinda expensive compared to some other LA supermarkets. but there's all kinds of cheap processed junk at Ralphs.
and are these fat man questions because its regarding food?

by expo, under the new apartments they are building there, i think its weyburn, by where olive garden used to be, over in that area.awaitingmailman wrote:im waiting until july to get a place cause i want to see if i could sneak into weyburn. it'll suck cause mostly likely i'll have to find housing on a short notice. oh well.

Re: UCLA Law Class of 2011
anyone else get a housing offer today? i'm a bit confused. it says that you basically have no shot in hell of changing your room (which sucks for those of us who just got stuck with a 2 bedroom), and that if you want to have it for 2 years, you have no shot of getting into a studio for that second year... anyway to get around that? judging by my own personality, i can't imagine that many folks in law school are particularly low maintenance roommates, which could make weyburn seem pretty not doable.
also--what is the deal with meal plans? is that included with weyburn--or do we have to buy one separately? are they mandatory?
and how about financial aid? it says we have to make our initial payment by JUNE 10! i don't even have $500 in my bank account right now. is there any leeway for those who will be relying on loans to make that first housing payment?
and parking--it says that parking is not necessarily guaranteed. what are we supposed to do if we don't get a spot? can we back out?
suddenly weyburn is not looking so delightful.

weyburn rooms have a kitchen so you dont need to buy a meal plan (buying a meal plan isn't realistic anyway because you'd have to go up to the dorms to eat your meals and the dorms aren't even in the same direction as Weyburn.undecided2011 wrote:anyone else get a housing offer today? i'm a bit confused. it says that you basically have no shot in hell of changing your room (which sucks for those of us who just got stuck with a 2 bedroom), and that if you want to have it for 2 years, you have no shot of getting into a studio for that second year... anyway to get around that? judging by my own personality, i can't imagine that many folks in law school are particularly low maintenance roommates, which could make weyburn seem pretty not doable.

im not sure if payments can be delayed. maybe they can work something out with the financial aid office? its best to call both housing and financial aid to ask about it.
parking is done through a whole seperate office so you have to accept or decline your weyburn office before you can find out about parking. yeah it sucks. dont bank on street parking either cause its a zoo.

Trader Joe's will be on the corner of Weyburn and Tiverton. The actual building where it is going to move into is done, I think it will open later this year.

A couple Weyburn thoughts -
- I have yet to accept my Weyburn offer and today I got an e-mail reminding me about the deposit deadline; the e-mail also mentioned a "payment agreement" that can be arranged if necessary and to send an e-mail through the UCLA housing ask section (http://uclahousing.custhelp.com/rd?1=Av ... ~6H~&2=783) for more information.
- Parking is not guaranteed because if everyone requested it they would not have enough spots...however, Weyburn has now been open two years and each of the past two years everyone who has requested parking has gotten it (this is per the person I spoke to in the Weyburn office).
HTH!

I highly recommend all of you with the opportunity to sign a lease at Weyburn decline to do so. That way I have a better chance of getting a spot there. I mean, it sucks! Don't do it!

I'm getting nervous now that I know people are being offered spots at Weyburn. I was told at the Housing Office that they'd start letting people know in July.
Finding housing on such short notice is going to suck. If I don't get it, I have a feeling I'm going to end up south of Wilshire. Hopefully there's a bus that goes from those apartments to campus. Right now, I'm spoiled - I live in apartments right across from the dorms so I'm really close to campus. I went to UCLA for undergrad so feel free to ask me any questions about UCLA or Westwood.

i think people that are being offered spots are the guaranteed housing people. once they accept or reject their offers the Housing office will get to the lottery people.
the big blue bus runs along Westwood. but my friend lived south of wilshire for two years and she just walked. its not too long- 25 minutes? its longer distance wise than westwood aparments but at least its a straight road with no hills. im thinking of going south of wilshire too if i dont get weyburn.

I heard there are only two bars in Westwood. Is that right? Where does everybody go on weekends? Do they drive into other parts of LA? I really like having a variety of bars of in walking distance, I think I'm spoiled too.sarahs5 wrote:I went to UCLA for undergrad so feel free to ask me any questions about UCLA or Westwood.

yeah, it's a straight path from wilshire to campus, but once on campus, there's a big hill to get to north campus where the law school is. dude, i dunno, south of wilshire seems kinda far to walk everyday. big blue bus might be an option though.awaitingmailman wrote:sarahs5 wrote:I'm getting enervous now that I know people are being offered spots at Weyburn.
