I couldn't find a Wachovia close to campus when I was there, which doesn't mean much of anything, truth be told.

See you guys in the Fall. I was (wierd saying this) an NYU undergrad so feel free to ask any questions about the neighborhood. Hope you're all as excited as I am.

Closest Wachovia is Broadway and 10th. Five blocks is nothing.

Also, McDonald's ATMs only charge 99 cents. If you're ever away from your bank, it's the next best option.

I'm just going to start a Wachovia account (there are no Chases or Commerces in 'Bama :| ) because I'm impatient. Plus, the five block walk will be good for me.

Make sure you get a Free Student Checking. Although you're still a student, you can have one even after graduation. They don't check or cancel the account.

5 blocks? I had no idea. Kick tail. That means I won't have to change one thing in my life. WOO HOO!

I paid $1725 and got a STEAL for my bedroom in a four bedroom, two bath, floor through in TriBeCa (just east of the Village).
I couldn't find D'Ag apartments where you get a common room for only $1400. It looks like this quote is about the L2 apartments which are $1700 according to the website.
Augh! I don't think I can afford student housing!

Its going to be tough to find anything for 1400 anywhere in Manhattan even if you room with 2 other people. You're going to have to go to BK, way uptown, or Jersey. I am looking for a roommate to share a 2BD/2BA and open to different places as long as the commute is no more than 15-20 minutes from campus.

So am I right that you need to be in Manhattan for that short of a commute? How much are you looking to pay? What areas are you looking in?

If 2/3 of the first years live in student housing, how are they all making this work?

Sorry, I just assumed the one they showed us at ASD was the one listed for $1440. If you find a place in Brooklyn Heights (first stop over the bridge) then it's a do-able 15-20 min commute. I'm also willing to do a 2/3 BR somewhere downtown as long as it's reasonable and livable.

So Vaultbound and RexRegnat, are you two definitely not doing student housing? Also, vaultbound are you still considering chicago?

Are you all looking for roommates on here? Are you male or female? Smoking/pets?

How do you feel about cluttered/messy (but not gross) female roommates?

The ad says "flex" 3 bedroom, which means at least one of the bedrooms is not an actual bedroom. Also, there is a broker's fee -- usually 10% of the annual rent, or $3,690 for this apartment.

That said, it still looks like a pretty good deal and probably worth a look.

Often, ads posted by brokers are for nonexistent apartments and are designed just to get you to call. As in, you'll call the guy and he'll say, "oh, the Union Square place -- I'm sorry, I JUST rented it! But I have plenty of other listings, so why don't you tell me what you're looking for and I'll see what I can do?"

Actually that specific one is awful. I figured it was a 2BR but it's a 1BR with a "big living room" that you would have to convert with a T-wall. Conversions are usually $750/wall so that would be $1500 up front just to make that a 3BR with a living room. Even then, the T-wall would be thin and might not even reach the ceiling.

Apt hunting is awful but there are some diamonds in the rough.

Yep, the same exact thing people selling used cars do. Assholes.

Am I right that you cannot get a living room in Dag? Unless you are living in a 2 bedroom by yourself? And the same with Mercer?

How do students manage without a living room? How do you have people over?

I am a non smoker with no pets. I have been looking at places like this in Hoboken, NJ.

no one else wants to join me in brooklyn? i like the idea of life that feels separate from school, then again i haven't lived in a dorm since freshman year of college, 8 years ago.

on another note, going through these lenders, and it seems that a couple will be objectively cheaper if you do the math comparing this .5% reduction in interest rate against that 4% forgiveness of the total loan. anybody figured that out yet?

Hi guys....been away for a while. Question: do you think living off-off campus (i.e., Hoboken/Park Slope) presents difficulties when it comes to studying? I'm worried that late nights in the library just won't be possible (taking the PATH, for example, probably isn't so easy/safe at 3AM). Do you think this is going to be an issue?

Rex- That place does look nice (although who cares about parking!), but if I am going to spend $1500 then I feel like I might as well do student housing or get a small place close to school. I've heard Hoboken is much nicer than Jersey City though.

Aleph- I am pretty sure I will be joining you in Brooklyn for 2L and 3L (if not 1L also). How far is the park slope commute? It looks like it is farther south than I realized, do you have to go up through the financial district? I was hoping more for Brooklyn Heights or Greenpoint.
Let me get back to you on the lenders, I haven't looked at it yet, but I like figuring that stuff out.

Jazzy-I think if you are determined to study on campus until 3am that would be a problem (although paying for cabs every once in a while wouldn't be too bad), but I don't think that is necessary. Even if you like study groups you could just make sure you meet earlier and then you can study on your own close to home late at night. A lot of people don't even like study groups. Also, I don't know about the PATH, but I felt safe on the subway at night as long as I wasn't alone. You could find a commuting buddy.

I would be more worried about getting home after social things and commuting every morning to get to class on time.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, what you say makes sense...it's just so damn hard to find adequate couples housing for any affordable amount on the island...you get SO much more bang for your buck in Hoboken.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
