We qualified for the same amount. Most law schools don't have need-based grants. I think the UCs have them though.lawgirl24 wrote:Maybe not. I'm visiting Pepperdine next week. Yea I have an EFC of zero and received no grants as well. I think that's just one of the major differences between Ugrad and Grad school. I have 22,250 in federal loans available to me per year (day student) and the rest will be covered by GradPlus loans.

I've placed a housing guide on the first page/post of this thread. It's basically the one Southwestern gives out, plus a few additions by me. If you have anymore details on certain areas or apartment building links, let me know and I'll add them. I just threw them on the first page so that if you want to look at it later, you don't have to be searching through the middle of this thread trying to find the post.
Hope: I threw in your comments about WeHo onto the list. They were too good not to include!

I am going to go with ALL Student Loan they seemed to have good rates for California students, and they are non-profit, which I think is less scary since they aren't answering to stockholders (as sock says). Which means to me that they have less incentive to screw you over on the rewards and rates.
I think that's a good idea, the first post is a good place to have a table of contents of sorts, this thread is already speeding up and I'm sure it will be quite large by the time August rolls around!snowboarder2713 wrote:I've placed a housing guide on the first page/post of this thread. I was in Levenson's class too. I thought she was great - really interesting and funny.
This may be a very dumb question, but for the federal loans, do you just get the $ from the gov't? How does that work? I'm so slow on the financial aid stuff - I need to get on that.

My understanding is that the only money you get directly from the gov't is grants. The loan programs (Perkins, Stafford, Direct, GradPlus) are through a private lender (of your choosing) authorized by the government and you are guaranteed certain rates, etc. I'm not sure exactly what role the gov't plays in that situation; I don't know if they insure the loan or what, but they must have some role since the federal loan forgiveness programs exist.hope wrote:This may be a very dumb question, but for the federal loans, do you just get the $ from the gov't? About financial aid.
How long did it take any of you to receive the final financial aid forms after having to fill out the extra data on the website. AND do you have to wait for these forms before getting all the financial aid/loan stuff started? I'm just trying to get all my finances in order so I can start on house/apartment hunting.

Re: Loyola Law School (L.A.) - Class of 2011
To your first question, no one has gotten the final financial aid forms yet. According to the LLS website (LinkRemoved), "our office will finalize your awards and send you your Official Award Letter. We will begin to mail Official Award Letters in mid to late June 2008." For the second question, I was going to email the fin aid office to figure that out. I'm assuming our estimated financial aid will be our final financial aid, minus any huge mistakes you made on the FAFSA or any income you tried to hide. But I'm definitely interested in finding out if we can start applying for GradPLUS loans (or when we can start doing so).PeanutButterJellyTIME wrote:About financial aid.

I'm getting my done through CitiBank because that's who handled all my Ugrad loans. But about ALL Student Loans, wasn't that the company that just said that they weren't going to issue any more loans due to the economy? I remember some thread on here talking about it, but I can't remember what company it is.

Thanks for the info buddy, can't wait to eventually meet all of you once school starts.
Oh and for the other guy who tried asking Loyola for extra money and failed, how do you know or when did you find out. I just sent Jannell a letter today and was wondering when I should expect response.

I emailed the Finaid office and they said to wait for the official award letter (June) before applying for GradPlus or any loans for that matter.snowboarder2713 wrote:But I'm definitely interested in finding out if we can start applying for GradPLUS loans (or when we can start doing so).
That was Total Higher Education (T.H.E). ALL is still going strong(I think), and hopefully they will continue to do so!But about ALL Student Loans, wasn't that the company that just said that they weren't going to issue any more loans due to the economy? I guess I'm one of the ones that emailed and failed. She emailed me a day after and said no.PeanutButterJellyTIME wrote:Thanks for the info buddy, can't wait to eventually meet all of you once school starts.

However, the other guy did email Jannell and I don't know exactly what happened, but he received a letter later that said yes.

Re: Loyola Law School (L.A.) - Class of 2011
maybe you guys did this already but
I just called the financial aid office and they said to goto http://www.lls.edu/admissions/finaid/ ---> Click on "About your Estimated Award Letter" then follow the steps.
they have tips on how to determine what lender to use there too
i know it probably says it in a million places but when are the 2nd deposits due?

Sorry to rehash bad memories bowNarrow, but its been a day and I'm still free of any response. I hope thats a good sign but I'll keep you updated.
Is it the financial aid process supposed to be pretty quick or what? If they make us wait till June then will we have money and TIME to give deposits for our apartments/condos/1 bedrooms.
2nd Deposit is due JUNE 2ND.

Re: Loyola Law School (L.A.) - Class of 2011
I have a feeling we'll have to wait until June. Also, I want to say that LLS doesn't give money out until the first day of classes. This is how GW does it and I think schools might actually have to wait until the first day of classes to hand out the money. So for deposits and first month's rent, that'd probably be something you have to work out with the landlord beforehand. I'd double check that though. Is it the financial aid process supposed to be pretty quick or what? If they make us wait till June then will we have money and TIME to give deposits for our apartments/condos/1 bedrooms.
This is GW Law's Policy
I've looked through the LLS site, and I haven't found anything yet. After the first day of classes and once your loan funds have been deposited into your GW student account, if a credit balance is available after tuition and fees have been fully paid for the semester, you may receive a refund check from the University. In absolutely no case are loan funds available to you prior to the first day of classes in any semester.
------------------------
Yep found it. My suspicions are right.
The eRefund service allows students to have refunds directly deposited to their bank account. This service is offered by the Law School free of charge. For further details and to enroll in this service please visit:
http://intranet.lls.edu/studentaccounts ... index.html
Refunds will be available beginning the first week of classes. However, due to the heavy volume of business during this time we unfortunately cannot guarantee the availability of refunds during the first week of class. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I think in CA you can only get needbased grants from public schools...so Boalt, Davis, Hastings, or UCLA.lawgirl24 wrote:Maybe not. I'm visiting Pepperdine next week. are we pretty sure orientation starts August 11th? The person I spoke with in admissions today said we'd find out in July - that seems so late. Particularly if we have to turn in 2 week notices at jobs, want to take trips beforehand, etc....

Re: Loyola Law School (L.A.) - Class of 2011
I think someone called and the representative told the person that it was tentatively scheduled for that date. I really wish they'd tell us sooner too, but they do tell you all over the place to expect to be in LA in early August, so I guess that's our warning.
As for the happy hour, as soon as we get to L.A. before school starts. Anybody else starting to feel weird that classes are winding down in college? In a few weeks, I'll start saying, "Back when I was in college...", and that will be weird.
