Re: U. of Michigan Law School '11
I just got the summer start info letter.
I guess we're doing torts and contracts. Exciting!
What's kind of neat is one of the profs does IP and antitrust and is one that I wrote about in my 'Why Michigan' essay.
Cool!
Preview weekend in March baby!

yeah. the only true info on there is that we're doing contracts and torts (in addition to legal practice) and we have profs. Sherman Clark and Omri Ben-Shalar.

I wish I could summer start. I wonder if you summer starters will have a leg up on getting 1L firm jobs. I hope my work experience gives me a boost for those, thinking of the debt makes me ill.
Michigan is going to be awesome though! (I'm up to 95 % committeed, from about 85% a month ago. That last 5% is my personally estimated chances of getting into Yale.)

In one of the student blogs on Michigan's website, someone states that summer start does indeed give a leg up in the 1L job hunt. Since summer starters will have grades to show, and more classes completed, the interview process is made easier. I'm pretty happy about it.

This is depressing...I thought Possum and only one or two other people were Summer start, and I was already bummed about that. But it looks like nearly everyone is summer. I guess I'm just not as cool as the rest of you. They gave me Fall.

You might be able to switch. That blog link from TheRedDeath suggested that switching isn't too much trouble.

as much as I would like to switch to summer and hang with the TLS crew, and be 1 of approx. 90 students for the first semester, and take one fewer doctrinal class, I just think fall is better for me. Gives me more time to save up some money. Gives me more time to get my ass to Europe.
I sat in on a torts class with Prof Clark. There's a snipet of him in the DVD. He was awesome. Very dynamic, very funny. Looking forward to his class.
Well, shit, now I just read that post above me about summer starters having better chances for 1L jobs. Damn. Maybe I should request....

You don't have to do the trash-heap.
There is also Bittersweet, Crystal Mountain, Timber-Ridge... just over on the west side of the state. maybe an hour drive.
Granted, none of these are amazing downhill places... It's not like skiing in Colorado. But they're sufficient for a good time, and closer than Boyne. But don't get me wrong... Boyne is great, and you should definitely plan on heading up there while you're in Michigan.
While on that note, you all need to make a trip up to the U.P. I don't really know how to explain it. The cleanest air you've ever breathed, gorgeous outdoors, bears that sit in the middle of the road, and the people!! Well, I don't know about the people. They're terrifying and charming all at the same time.
Basically, it's like Canada, without the Mountees!

the fact that summer starters have grades to show employers is not necessarily a good thing. after a rough exam period, i'm glad that my resume is gpa-free, for now.Well, shit, now I just read that post above me about summer starters having better chances for 1L jobs. Anyone know about indoor tennis courts in the area?

Nearby indoor tennis courts would more than make up for the miserable cold one would feel while walking to them.

Doesn't UM say to not put your GPA on your resume anyway? I guess it's a moot point because the interviewer may ask, but just wondering.
Also, in that same regard the curve is still held at the same level for the summer start classes, it will have been a bad decision for 1/2 of the students (in regard to 1L jobs). This may be mitigated by the fall semester when some students will do better (and some worse) so the lower grades will be distributed more throughout the group.
