Indeed. I'm waiting until May for CavComp to unveil their Mac bundles. At which time, I will order one on the spot.

I really hope they include the black MacBook in the bundles. I don't want the ubiquitous white one.

That... is a very good questionSgtBilko wrote:How do you have a day off this close to trial?

It helps that a) the central question in this three-week trial is one that has, in almost all respects, was the central focus of a two-year arbitration; b) the attorneys on the case are fairly self-sufficient; and c) with the exception of a few depositions between now and trial, all discovery has concluded, and both parties have a pretty precise sense of the realm of available evidence, especially since so much of it draws from the original arbitration record.
Once the attorneys start focusing more on preparing directs, crosses, and the pretrial memo, things will get much more hairy.

There is absolutely nothing to fear. I've owned Mac laptops since 2001 and, especially after watching my friends ship their Dells back for repairs a dozen times, have sworn by them ever since. Law school gives me a great excuse to replace this 4-year-old Powerbook with a shiny new Macbook Proaguyingeorgia wrote:I'm afraid of the MAC

Excellent use of a pun above!
Check out this sweet deal I have coming up: 2 week trial at ITC starting in a few weeks. My boss doesn't want to sit in court so I have to go. But there are 2 other paralegals who have worked the case so I'm just a third and basically a surrogate for my boss. I don't even have to come to the office, just show up to court, play on the iPhone, work a stopwatch, take a few notes and go home. Should be the easiest 50-60 hour weeks I've ever had and will have.
As to Mac, I'm also replacing a 4-year old PB! Replacing my computer is currently in the top-5 things I'm most excited about starting law school. Cuz I'm a dork like that....

I've never owned a Mac - for those of you who have them what do you like about them more than PCs?

That is a very sweet deal. It's probably worth mentioning that another reason things haven't gotten insane yet is because I supervise two other paralegals with whom I can divide duties. Having other people around to help out makes fire drills a lot less chaotic.SgtBilko wrote:Check out this sweet deal I have coming up: 2 week trial at ITC starting in a few weeks. 1. Aesthetically, they look much cooler.cantwaitforuva wrote:I've never owned a Mac - for those of you who have them what do you like about them more than PCs?
2. Their hardware seems higher in quality/build and thus more reliable i.e. fewer instances of "my hard drive went kaput!" or "my motherboard fried!"
3. Their operating system is more stable, meaning less risk of Word crashing and eating your outlines.

4. Much more useful for managing media like photos and working with them, IMO.
5. Much more customizable in terms of dekstop, layout, etc. You can basically set it up however works best for you.

Re: UVA Class of 2011 Housing Thread
A thought just came to me in regards to computers.
I have a friend at ugrad who has two computers (both laptops) - he keeps one at home and has a really small one that he takes to class to take notes.
Would it be crazy to buy a second computer this summer?
Pros:
1. Can use that $2500 in loans, so I won't be paying out of pocket.
2. Could get a smaller one to take to class - the one I have right now is a bitch to carry because of its dimensions
3. Would have two computers, so if one were to crash, I would be ok. (especially if it happened around finals time and I needed one right away)
Cons:
1. Not absolutely necessary
What do you guys thinks?

Re: UVA Class of 2011 Housing Thread
I keep a PC desktop and a Mac laptop. The PC is going on five years old, and I use it for basic web surfing and TiVo (the media center capabilities mean it can record TV shows - quite cool). I bought it refurbished from HP a few years ago for like 500 bucks... definitely, definitely worth it. Beyond having the security of a second computer should the laptop crash or get stolen, I keep it hooked up to a large monitor, cable TV, and speakers so it functions as more of an entertainment system.
EDIT: Since desktop hard drives are much less prone to failure than laptop hard drives, I also use the PC for downloading large files.

Hmm. I think I would end up buying another laptop, though, so that I would have something small to take to class. I'm just wondering if that would be silly.

Re: UVA Class of 2011 Housing Thread
It's not a bad idea at all. More people do it than you would think. That being said, is the added sense of security in having a backup and the increased ease of carrying around a lighter computer worth $2000? When you consider that you would use it over the three years of law school, it's not overly expensive at all (an extra month of rent per year essentially).cantwaitforuva wrote:Hmm. Actually, I say you get 2 extra computers rather than 1 extra. One for home; one to take to school; and one to give to me!

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
