how are the hollywood, hollywood hills, and miracle mile areas? the hills seem really nice, but ive heard its mostly old people there...

hollywood can be ghetto; the hills are great, but more expensive and there are less apartments available, as there are mostly homes there. Try some of the neighborhoods like beachwood or los feliz

As Hope says, the hills can be nice but are more expensive. Miracle mile is nice, along with Hancock Park. Apartments in these areas can still be found at decent rates, but rents are rising, so it requires a bit of looking.

really, even if its near sunset, near all the clubs and all that? also is it better/worse than dt?

I had a 2bd large apartment a block off of Sunset near the Laugh Factory for $1500. When we left I looked it up on craigslist and they had raised the rent to $1800. You can find stuff around the sunset strip, but there's not much that comes up less than $1800. I don't think most people consider that the Hollywood Hills though. Maybe north of Sunset west of Laurel Canyon. East of Laurel Canyon, I'd say the "hills" are north of Hollywood Blvd, though I'm not sure if there is an unofficial cutoff for what is usually called the Hollywood Hills.

One annoying thing I will say about living right off of Sunset around the strip is that you are not freeway close, so that becomes a pain.

cool, thanks for the help guys. I've sent in my deposit already, but not even sure if i want to go to school this year or reapply in the fall after another lsat retake. just doing some research into housing just in case....

Yeah i actually had some success doing this. I just sent an email to Jannell Roberts...i think thats her name...letting her know i had other scholarships offers for more money, but my heart was set on Loyola and I may not be able to attend due to financial considerations and about 2 weeks ago i got a letter along with my estimated award letter saying they had reconsidered my scholarship from 51K to 68K....needless to say i was pleasantly surprised. i figured it would only be a couple thousand. the lessson is it never hurts to ask.

Has anyone tried to negotiate for more scholarship money?

So now that the first seat deposit deadline has passed, is the list at the beginning of this thread accurate of everyone who will be attending Loyola in the fall? Also, join the facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=14429351933) if you haven't already!

The neighborhood near Sunset and all the clubs (laugh factory, etc.) is West Hollywood, which is nice, and safer and cleaner than Hollywood. I had a studio there for $875 3 years ago. The hills area near the Hollywood sign is called "Beachwood" and is super close to the 101 which is really convenient. There are a lot of apartment buildings in that area, a cute coffee shop as well as bars and restaurants on Franklin (nearby Franklin Village), and Griffith Park is right there, which has acres of hiking & horse trails. I have a 2/2 now for $1600 in this area.

Hope, can you tell us more about the WeHo? I've pulled this off the wikipedia page and it says this:

A couple questions: I am open-minded and I support gay rights (and have gay friends, etc.), but I've never lived in an area that's known as a gay part of town. Did you find it easy to adjust? Also because it has an active nightlife, did it get obsessively loud outside?

WeHo is nice because there are a ton of apartment options and you can typically find good prices. There definitely is a lot going on as far as restaurants and clubs, and traffic gets a little heavier at night and on the weekends because it's kind of a "scene" where people like to come. It's very clean, and I felt pretty safe unless for some reason I couldn't find street parking close to my place and had to walk a couple blocks at 2 am. As well as having a large gay population, there are also a lot of "industry" folks there (young actors) and lots of really elderly people who seem to have lived there for ages There are plenty of gyms, grocery stores (whole foods, trader joes), restaurants, & Runyon Canyon (for hikes) nearby. I lived for a year pretty close to the Sunset Strip (near House of Blues and the Standard) and yes, I could hear the thumping of bass from nearby clubs and/or house parties. Personally I prefer being tucked away in the foothills where it's quieter. WeHo is also further from the 101, although only by about 15 minutes depending which part. You could still probably catch a bus to the Hollywood/Vine metro station and get downtown in 10 minutes (from the metro!)
Halloween is an insanely giant party in WeHo, as is the gay pride parade - the streets are closed and thousands of people come from all over. Certainly fun though!

I'm trying to save on transportation costs and time. I know it is probably ghetto, but I'm only walking at the most one block so it'll probably be okay. Apparently like one block from Loyola happens to be in K-town?

Maybe also I'm just used to it. I've always walked to school from kindergarden all the way to college. Not really used to this commuting concept.

I live in Westwood right now and going to lls at 2pm on a friday took 1 hour. i think no matter what time of day if you are coming from the west side it's gonna take about an hour -recommend olympic blvd over wilshire bc driving through beverly hills can be a bi***

Miracle Mile/Weho are pretty fun places -- i would avoid the park la brea mega complex tho --it's all show but it's pretty lame overall.

Sad me, i want to move further west! i'm thinking that's not going to be very feasible tho...plus i have to find a roommate. sighhhhhh

I'm sure there may be a couple TLS lurkers out there that may be attending LLS, but to my count we've got 12 TLSers enrolled in the day program and 2 enrolled in the evening program.

We should have a great time at Loyola! I'm definitely thinking of getting together a happy hour/ getting drunk hours sometime right before law school starts. We'll have to say goodbye to slacker study habits and free time for quite a while. What better way than to do it over some alcohol? Anyways, don't forget the join the facebook group.

I have a feeling that this thread will be talking a lot more now on housing options and areas that we should all be looking to live. Don't worry publicservant, I need to find a roomie and I bet a good number of people here need to as well. As soon as our second seat deposits get processed, we'll have access to Loyola's roommate/housing classifieds so that should ease some of our pain.

Bottom line, I can't wait!

(Btw, I think I'm finally going to buy a mac over summer. I hate all the viruses PCs get and with Loyola's exam software now being able to work on macs, it may be too tempting not to go with it.)

Did anyone get their estimated award letter? I have an EFC of 0 (plus a dependant) and only $21,000 in federal loans! There was no mention of a scholarship. I just got accepted last week. How do they expect me to pay!?!?!

That's why. I was accepted as an evening student as well and recieved zero $$$ (I recieved tons of money at other schools). As a rule of thumb, evening students don't get that much money, especially at Loyola.

In any event, have fun funding Loyola's scholarship fund!
