So how much does it cost to take the bar exam? This freaked me out:

Bar Exam Loan (Private loan for third year law student)
A student may borrow up to $20,000 (depending on lender) to help with the cost of the bar examination. The application must be received no earlier than six months before graduation and no later than nine months after graduation.

Don't know what you've been reading or where that came from, but the fee for bar exams in the US is roughly $200-$400. It depends on the state.

I am currently studying for the bar exam now (in Ohio) and here is the breakdown of my direct costs:

1,250---Direct payment for character and fitness evaluation, and fees to register to take the bar exam
3,500--Bar review course material
250 (estimate)---Additional study materials and miscellaneous expenses (books, blank note cards, notebook paper, parking for the bar exam, shipping back study materials).

Many people take multiple review courses (which bumps up the cost an extra 1000-2000 dollars or so). Others have to pay for a hotel near the bar exam, or travel to the relevant city. It would not be unreasonable to rack up 10,000 in direct bar exam related fees and expenses. And yes, some people take out loans for living expenses and moving expenses, as it is highly recommended not to work while you study.
