Is it possible to stay in parents' health insurance plan?
Is it possible? Does the school allow for it? Does it count as a "source of financial support?" (not like it costs my parents more to have me in the plan).
Am I missing anything?
Am I missing anything?

All of this sort of depends on the specifics of the plan.

It depends on the plan, but it's pretty standard that students get cut off at age 23.

So you're saying it depends on which health insurance I have and their rules. Okay. But what about the school? Will they care? Will they review my entire financial aid package again because I have a new "source of financial support"? Does it even count as one?Cleareyes wrote:All of this sort of depends on the specifics of the plan.

I think my parent's plan is good until I'm 24, which won't happen until May of my 3L year. I'm safe for a while, thankfully.

I'm good as long as I am in school full time. I'd guess it matters if the school considers your parent's info when doing your financial aid stuff.jschuyler wrote:ask your schooltrancerz3 wrote:So you're saying it depends on which health insurance I have and their rules. Depends on the plan, depends on your state (In Minnesota by law you're covered until age 25 or marriage, regardless of student status; Utah covers you up to age 26). No, it doesn't make a different in terms of financial aid.

Depends how old you are and the plan restrictions.trancerz3 wrote:Is it possible? Does the school allow for it? Does it count as a "source of financial support?" (not like it costs my parents more to have me in the plan).

Some plans will let you stay on as long as you're 25 or under and a full time student, but you'll have to read the policy carefully to see whether you qualify.
I don't think the school would mind.

Okay, so I checked and they said I would be eligible under my parents plan until the age of 25 as long as I am a fulltime student and dependent on my parents for at least 50% of my expenses.revolution724 wrote:Depends how old you are and the plan restrictions.trancerz3 wrote:Is it possible? I really want to stay in the plan because it would save me about 2 grand a year. But I got a nice grant package from my school. I'm curious to know whether they'll start reviewing my financial aid file now, thinking I've hit a treasure pot? Perhaps they will be curious to know how I am 50% dependent on my parents (even though I really won't be, but the insurance need not know). Maybe the school doesn't even know that my plan requires this.
What should I do?

Re: Is it possible to stay in parents' health insurance plan?
My parent's will let me stay on 'til I am 25, which covers me for 1L, I'll take what I can get... Its especially important in MA where its the law to have health insurance and you get penalized on your state taxes for any amount of time during the year you didn't have it.
It had not even crossed my mind that my school would give a flying rats ass about where I was getting my insurance from... I think you are overanalyzing..

Re: Is it possible to stay in parents' health insurance plan?
I wanted to get this thread rolling again because of the recently passed Health Care Reform Act.
I have been reading that it allows people to be covered by parent's insurance up to the age of 26. In my case that would save me an extra years worth of insurance costs!!
I'll be turning 25 in Sept and thus kicked off my dad's insurance for my 2L year, unless this HCR will be in effect....
Does anyone know the definite details of this or inquired with their insurance companies??

In standard plans students get cut off at 23. The healthcare bill may have extended that to 26 (I'm not sure), but if your parents have very good plans, like the ones doctors have, then the cut off may be 26 anyway.

It does extend it to 26- but that doesn't go into effect until Sept 23rd of this year.ughOSU wrote:In standard plans students get cut off at 23.
