Noob Q About FinAid

Post by clshopeful » Tue Jun 28, 2016 11:00 pm

So my parents make combined of like 150k. However, I will be paying for my last 2 years of LS. I am transferring to Berkeley.
I filled out FAFSA as an independent, but my question is, will I get the entire like 70k I'll need for tuition + room and board for the year? FAFSA says I'm estimated at only a 20k stafford loan.

You'll get the rest as Grad+ loans.

If you're asking what else he filled out to qualify for Grad PLUS loans, the answer is nothing. When you fill out the FAFSA, you're automatically considered for every type of federal aid. The school just reports on your Stafford qualifications in your initial award letter, because that's the only one with a limit (so presumably you'd want to know if you only qualified for $10k a year in Staffords). Once you actually decide to enroll, you get a finalized financial aid offer which adds on Grad PLUS loans to cover the remainder of your expenses.
