Negotiate Scholarship off NYU Waitlist? Forum

Hi guys recently admitted off the waitlist at NYU. Im stoked but the scholarship they offered is pretty lousy. 20,000$ for my first two years 10,000$ for my third year. I got much better offers from Cornell, GULC and Michigan. I was wondering do you think it would be possible to negotiate for more at NYU even though Im coming off the waitlist. I only have a week to confirm my admittance. Any advice?

Worth a shot. Send them scans of your other offers and say while you were happy to be admitted off of the waitlist, it is unlikely you'll be able to attend unless you receive more aid. Be polite and direct.

I tried this yesterday and it didn't work. I did get a nice long form letter highlighting the advantages of NYU. It's always worth a shot though.

I wouldn't count on much. NYU doesn't consider any of those schools to be peers for negotiating scholarships (at least according to others' experiences).

And bear in mind that the 75th percentile scholarship amount according to their 509 form is 30k a year. So you did pretty damn well for coming off the waitlist.

Wow! Really ? I'm surprised NYU is so tight with scholarship money then . I could've sworn they'd be more flexible than say Columbia .

Same thing happened to me. Everyone is different, though. I'd say to be polite and swing for the fences - you might get what you're asking for!

NYU offered me 35K; Columbia offered me 85K. I showed NYU the Columbia scholarship, NYU bumped me up to 55K. This was after I had been a finalist for an NYU named scholarship, and been asked to come to NYU to meet with professors and such.

In sum, NYU will negotiate but they are very stingy based off of my completely anecdotal evidence.

It appears to be the other way around. Not shocking really, with Columbia having a lot more resources than NYU generally speaking (e.g., Columbia's endowment is 3X bigger).

Sorry, I just meant 85K total. 35K, 35k, and 17.5K (which I realize actually adds up to 87.5K -- I was rounding earlier).

Apologies for being short before--finals and all that. The trick to negotiating IMO is demonstrating credibly that you are willing to walk away. I was in at C with 60k and told NYU that I'm just gonna stick with them (NYU admitted me from the WL), even though NYU was offering 75k at the time. I told them that with finding a new apartment this late it just doesn't make sense for me to switch with that small of a difference in price, especially since they are basically the same school.

The other trick, which you cannot control, and is dispositive, is that you have to have something they want. For me, I think honestly I got lucky in that they needed my LSAT score b/c they were right on the edge of dropping in their median. I was thus successful. The point is, even if you negotiate perfectly by presenting a essentially a credible alternative, you still may lose.

I know this because I turned around and attempted to negotiate with C after NYU bumped me up to 87.5k, hoping they would match and I wouldn't have to return the sweater I prematurely bought. I literally said the exact same thing to C as I did to NYU, and they told me to have a nice day. Most of this is outside your control, but you do have to play the game to take advantage of the opportunities if there are there.

Thank you so much for this, and sorry too for the clueless question. My position may be somewhat different since I've put down my deposit at NU (not a peer school) and my stats don't help NYU's medians, but I'll still give it a shot. I live in Brooklyn and NYU is my dream school, not really sure I can turn down their offer regardless... Anyway, thanks again for your help, I really really appreciate it.
