Too late to negotiate
I have been torn between Columbia and Berkeley for weeks. CLS was slightly more expensive, but I ended up committing over the weekend. I have
90k in aid money so 210k in COA. Berkeley just offered me 67.5k in aid, but they just upped it to 97.5 more in aid today bringing my 3 year COA to 132k.
Is it too late to ask CLS for more money even though I already committed? Does anyone know if people have had luck with negotiations after committing in the past?

When you say you committed, do you just mean you put down a seat deposit? I told one school that my seat deposit was a sign of how serious I am about attending and asked for more money, which worked. Not sure if that would work for Columbia, though. Wouldn't hurt to try.YCDAACH wrote:I have been torn between Columbia and Berkeley for weeks. They know that you don't have to matriculate even though you put down a deposit. And who knows, maybe some money will become available after the deposit deadline if some folks didn't submit. I don't think it would hurt to try, and you can tell them about the bump from Berkeley.YCDAACH wrote:Yeah, I mean that I put down a deposit.OutOfTheQuestion wrote:When you say you committed, do you just mean you put down a seat deposit? (Congrats on both of those schools, btw!)

Re: Too late to negotiate
I am in a similar situation. I withdrew all of my applications except University of Minnesota and submitted a seat deposit at Northwestern. I didn't mean to not withdraw from Minnesota, I honestly just forgot. I just received an email from Minnesota saying that my scholarship has increased to full-tuition. Is it worth it to email Northwestern and see if they'll compete with that? I have already gone through successful negotiations with Northwestern, so I'm not sure if I should push it more. Help!!

It's a free roll. Meaning it costs you nothing and has the potential to save you a ton of money, do it.xng16 wrote:I am in a similar situation. Re: Too late to negotiate
I would be surprised if Northwestern budged. There's a list of schools that Northwestern considers when matching scholarship offers and I can't remember if U of Minnesota is included. Regardless, based on personal experience and what others here on TLS have said, the lower the ranking, the less they'll consider trying to match the offer, even if it's a very generous amount. That being said, I agree with mornincounselor that it doesn't cost anything to try. Good luck!xng16 wrote:I am in a similar situation. I was in a similar situation. Committed to Penn with a seat deposit and then got a matched offer from Chicago fifteen days later. Penn refused to renegotiate their scholarship.. not sure if they're out of money, don't think I'm worth what would be necessary, or just don't bump scholarships once you've placed a deposit.

Re: Too late to negotiate
I've negotiated after depositing. You obviously have to be willing to walk away from your deposit. Given that we're talking about an 80k difference, that would clearly be worth it.

Re: Too late to negotiate
It just depends on how much they want/need you. If they're over-enrolled, or your withdrawal does not adversely affect their desired stats, they may not increase the offer. However, it can't hurt to ask -- especially when you have another valid offer and aren't just asking because you want more money. There is no downside, just status quo, but there is potential upside that can only be realized by asking. They can't pull your offer or scholarship. If you are concerned that it will hurt your reputation or something down the road, don't be. Unless you seek them out, you will likely not have any interaction with admissions/financial aid once a student. Just don't be an ass.
